Mainichi Design inverts the concept of precious jewellery. We use no precious metals or jewels. Instead, unexpected, ordinary and everyday materials become pieces of wearable art.
Favourite materials include plastics, recycled leather offcuts, hemp and linen thread, recycled timbers, polypropylene sheet and bamboo.
The Designer
Dearne Herrenberg is a Melbourne based designer who graduated from the Bachelor of Built Environment, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane with a major in Interior Design in 2000. Dearne is a current member of the Design Institute of Australia and Craft Victoria.
After a holiday to Japan in late 2004, Dearne established “Mainichi” and began to put into practice her passion for fine arts, crafts and textile arts by making jewellery using unusual materials.
The jewellery collection consists of pieces that have been wholly designed and created by Dearne. The work is not dictated by fashion or current trends, but instead reflects the philosophy behind the name ( Mainichi translates from Japanese as “everyday”). Many of the materials are recycled, found or vintage, which means that each piece is truly a unique object.
As well as Mainichi, Dearne also runs an Interior Design practice in Melbourne, specialising in high end residential, retail and hospitality work.
